This is my senior capstone project called Nazaré. Named after the biggest wave in the world, Nazaré wants to create some waves of it’s own. My senior year of college I took a wine tasting class called Wines Around the World. It sparked my interest in wine and allowed me to experience new wines. So, I knew I wanted to brand a wine company for this project, but I didn’t know what theme and message I wanted to embody. I created a list of things that were important to me, and I kept going back to the beach. I grew up going to my grandparent’s beach house in Ocean City, NJ every summer. I have so many fond memories of longs nights on the beach, collecting sea glass with my Pop Pop, learning to surf, experiencing my first job, and so many more. It angers me when I see trash washed up on shore, so I decided to brand a company that is dedicated to cleaning the ocean while using recycled, ecofriendly material. Nazaré is a town located in Portugal, Spain. Surfers travel here to surf some of the biggest waves in the world. In January of 2022, a 26-year-old surfed a 97.3ft wave breaking the record. I picked the name Nazaré because I wanted this company to be impactful, bold, and strong like ocean waves. I created an original typeface for this brand. I wanted a bold, sturdy typeface that showcases the stength of the ocean as well as the curves and movement of the waves. I started with a lot of sketching. Sculptures in the Park was a collaborative project with Penn State architecture students. Students in Arch491 were tasked to created a series of buildings located on an 11-acre community in Cleveland, Ohio. They created stacked buildings based on the game jenja with contrasting elliptical pathways. My design team of three were then tasked to create a visual system that properly unifies the Jenga inspired buildings, naming concepts, tree canopy, contrast between blocky buildings and elliptical pathways. They had already picked the name Sculptures in the Park which was hard to work with because it was a lengthy name, but we made it work!&nbsp; The logo was inspired by the Jenga shaped building. Once the logo was finalized, we created a versatile textile using the shape. We wanted a simple textile that the community could use across a variety of deliverables. The options are endless for where else it can be applied. Our focus was to create a wayfinding system so the community could easily navigate the area. The angular shapes of the signage were directly taken from our logo design.&nbsp; The architecture students wanted to inspire the return of urban life in Cleveland through this design, aspiring to breathe life in the community from dusk till dawn. So, we created an app that will update the community on local events, news reports, weather, and more.&nbsp; Credits I worked alongside my classmates Becca Larson and Anna Gumaer to create Sculptures in the Park. that focused on experimenting with lighting, compositions, and angles. I started this project by researching unique lighting, concepts, stylization, and famous portrait photographers. This project required no concept however, I wanted to portray the feeling of no escape from yourself or how people perceive you. Though most of my initial photoshoots resulted in subpar images it allowed me to visualize how to portray a message through an image. After my first photoshoot I knew I needed another element to make this piece more engaging. I experimented with water and loved how the droplets interacted with the sparkles. However, capturing my model not flinching while I threw water at her face became an issue. So, I came up with the solution to have my model lay under plastic wrap covered in water droplets. This allowed my model to control her facial expressions while the water reflected her face in distorted ways. Flipping the portrait upside down was done so the water droplets were more prevalent. CreditsThese photoshoots were extremely messy, and I suggest never using glitter for anything. Four months later and I still find glitter in my carpet and belongings. A huge thank you to my models Juliet Dicarlo and Hannah Leight for putting up with glitter in places it should never be and being so incredible. Process Book Jackets The book jackets were a three-week project that focused on turning a stand-alone portrait into a functional book cover. I started my process by looking at thriller and mystery novels. Stephen King and Tana French covers were my main inspiration for this project. I wanted my book to be based on a crazy love story that turns into a woman’s worst nightmare with stalking, kidnapping, and murder. Since my portrait was a busy image I struggled with adding text in an intentional way. I wanted a typeface that was simple so the main focus was on the image. I decided on a simple san serif, Balboa,&nbsp;to allow the cover image to be the main focus. Instead of having a secondary typeface I used color, size, and italics to add variety and texture. For the typographic book jacket I made ink handprints and painted silence in ink. I also photographed ink and water droplets to possibly incorporate. These were interesting images, but they were not what I had in mind for my final. I wanted my cover to display more of a crazy stalker feel. My solution was sitting in a freezing car while it snowed. I used the fogged-up windows to write “Silence” and create handprints against the glass. This technique created the creepy, mysterious cover that I was aiming for. I used Frank New as the main typeface and Neonoir Bold as the secondary typeface. For this project I worked alongside Becca Baker, and Sam Chung. We were encouraged to engage with a collaborator from a diverse community. Through a family friend we found Lamar and immediately reached out to him. He loved the project and jumped at the opportunity to share his stories and impact a wider audience through an exhibition/campaign.&nbsp; This exhibition was built around Lamar’s personal experiences of being targeted as a criminal, especially when he wore a black hoodie.&nbsp;His mission is to eliminate pre-judgments and have people take a step back and experience someone else’s life for a day. We picked this style because Lamar wanted the audience to feel the emotions his father and him were feeling when they were pulled over for no apparent reason. We intentionally put the eyes high on the hoodie so when Lamar wears the hood down you cannot see the eyes. When his hood is up everyone can see the intense eyes staring at them. The idea was to have 23 black hoodies displayed vertically on a wall. The last hoodie would represent Lamar through a graphic that depicts his story. Each hoodie has an instructional tag on how it must be worn. These instructions came directly from Lamar and his experiences. The Exhibit FloorWe collected real stories from people who have seen or experienced racism, injustice, or stereotyping. They are scattered across the floor. People viewing the exhibition will either take a few minutes to read them or ignore them completely. It focused on reaching a target demographic and creating a physical experience for the user through package design. I started this project by putting together a moodboard and concept proposal. I wanted the packaging to be reusable and multi-faceted. The packaging lid could be removed and used as a cutting board for the product. Next, I conducted research based on my target demographic, wedding guests. After extensive research I interviewed a range of people to better understand what would be useful to the users. Based off the feedback I received during the interviews I created a protype using cardboard. Adjustments were made to make the packaging more user friendly and practical. I then went forward into physically building the wood box in my Uncle Ron’s woodshop. The hardest part of this process was creating a pattern that fit the brand. If I were to redo this project, I would create a more unique pattern that can be used as a textile across all Milestone’s products. I wanted to make an application that would keep people safe and healthy. My mom had called me a week before this project and told me she got Covid from the casino she went to. This inspired me to create Jackpot.&nbsp; I did a competitor analysis on casino websites and apps, but this was not very relevant to my project because none of the casinos I researched had a reservation system in place. So, I also analyzed apps that reserved seats at restaurants. I found that text alerts and coupons were a way to make this transition easier and more worthwhile for the users. I then started designing low fidelity wireframes. These were changed many times in order to get an interface that was easy to use. I wanted the user to spend a maximum of three minutes making a reservation. In order to achieve this, I had to simplify the interface and make the instructions explicitly clear. I created a user scenario to help evaluate areas that needed to be improved on. Once all the kinks were worked out in the low fidelities, I started adding color to make this casino kiosk look inviting. Originally, I wanted it to be Vegas themed with neon signs and bright colors. After testing this design, I realized it took away from the purpose of the kiosk and was very distracting. I decided to go back to my research to rethink my audience. From my reach I discover the majority of the casino users are male. However, I created a pink, tan, and green color scheme because I wanted the minority female audience to feel more comfortable to sign up to play poker and table games through this interface.&nbsp; Credits All creative direction and execution were self-directed. Then, we bounced ideas off each other to decide what theme we wanted to pursue. We ultimately landed on a space themed bar that will give the customers an extraterrestrial experience. We designed moonshine bottles, coasters, a deck of cards, to go alcohol pouches, and an animated billboard to gain attraction. We worked cohesively to create our word mark and patterns that are used throughout the deliverables. We laser cut the card box and moonshine coasters to keep the space aesthetic. I wish we took better images of the deliverables. Staging a bar for the photoshoot would have shown the deliverables in a realistic setting.
